Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens that pass from one host to another, and this topic (syllabus 10.1 and 10.2) looks at four major examples and at the drugs used against them. For cholera, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS you should know the name and type of pathogen responsible, from the bacterium Vibrio cholerae to the Plasmodium protoctists, the Mycobacterium species and the human immunodeficiency virus. Understanding how each disease is transmitted, whether through contaminated water, an insect vector, airborne droplets or body fluids, is the key to explaining how it can be controlled. A major theme is antibiotic resistance: its rise as a consequence of natural selection when antibiotics are overused or misused, the serious consequences of infections that no longer respond to treatment, and the steps that individuals, doctors and governments can take to slow it down.
