A strip of magnesium ribbon is held in tongs and ignited in a Bunsen flame, then plunged into a gas jar of oxygen. In a separate experiment, a sample of calcium turnings is heated strongly in a stream of dry oxygen gas.
(a) Write a balanced symbol equation, including state symbols, for the reaction of magnesium with oxygen, and state one visible observation made during the reaction. [3]

Part (a): Magnesium burning in oxygen
Magnesium is a Group 2 metal and forms a ion, so it combines with oxygen in a ratio to give the simple oxide:

Part (c): Why calcium reacts more vigorously than magnesium
Going down Group 2, atomic radius increases and first ionisation energy decreases, because the outer electrons are further from the nucleus and are shielded by an extra inner shell of electrons. Calcium, being below magnesium, therefore has a larger atomic radius and a lower first ionisation energy than magnesium. Its outer two electrons are more easily lost to oxygen atoms, so calcium reacts faster and more vigorously with oxygen than magnesium does.
