This opening topic (syllabus 1.1 to 1.3) sets out what it means to be alive and how biologists organise the huge diversity of life. All living organisms carry out seven life processes, often remembered as MRS GREN: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition. Being able to define each process precisely, for example excretion as the removal of the waste products of metabolism, is a common early exam requirement.

Classification groups organisms by the features they share. Every organism is named using the binomial system, an internationally agreed two-part name giving its genus and species, so that scientists everywhere refer to the same organism. Living things are sorted into groups, and Extended candidates place them into the five kingdoms, animal, plant, fungus, prokaryote and protoctist, and describe the main features of the vertebrate and arthropod groups within the animal kingdom, as well as the features of viruses. Modern classification also uses the sequences of bases in DNA, with more closely related species sharing more similar sequences. To identify unfamiliar organisms, biologists build and use dichotomous keys, which sort specimens step by step using pairs of contrasting, observable features.
