Living things must detect and react to changes around them, and this topic (syllabus 14.1 to 14.5) covers both nervous and hormonal control. The mammalian nervous system is divided into the central nervous system, the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves. Electrical impulses travel along sensory, relay and motor neurones, and a reflex arc allows a rapid, automatic response to a stimulus. Where two neurones meet at a synapse, the impulse is carried across the gap by neurotransmitter chemicals, ensuring signals travel one way only.

Hormones, chemicals released by glands into the blood, provide slower but longer-lasting control; adrenaline prepares the body for action, while insulin and glucagon regulate blood glucose. This links to homeostasis, the maintenance of a constant internal environment, including the control of body temperature by the skin. Finally, plants show tropic responses, growing towards light (phototropism) or with gravity (gravitropism), controlled by the hormone auxin.
