Reproduction is how organisms produce new individuals, and this topic (syllabus 16.1 to 16.6) begins by contrasting two strategies. Asexual reproduction involves one parent and produces genetically identical offspring, useful for rapid population growth, while sexual reproduction involves the fusion of haploid gametes to form a diploid zygote, creating offspring that are genetically different. "Rising levels of one hormone cause an egg cell to mature inside a follicle in an ovary. A sharp rise in a second hormone then triggers the follicle to release the egg cell (ovulation). After ovulation, the remains of the follicle develop into a structure that produces a third hormone, which maintains the thickened lining of the uterus. If the egg cell is not fertilised, the level of this third hormone falls, and the lining of the uterus breaks down."
