  • S.part1 10 questions

Part 1 opens the Speaking test with general identity questions before moving into two or three short topics (hobbies, hometown, daily routine, studies) each covered by three or four direct questions over four to five minutes. Answers here do not need to be long or deeply analytical; the priority is a natural, conversational response that goes slightly beyond a bare fact by adding a reason, an example, or a brief personal reaction, since a string of one-word or one-clause answers gives the examiner very little language to assess.

Because these topics are familiar and personal, the biggest risk is sounding rehearsed or reciting a memorised paragraph regardless of the actual question asked, which examiners are trained to notice and penalise under fluency and coherence. Practising a wide range of everyday topics with varied vocabulary and natural linking (rather than memorising fixed answers) prepares candidates far better than scripting exact responses.
