A Task 1 line-graph question shows one or more variables changing over time and asks for a factual, objective report of at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. No opinion, prediction beyond the data, or explanation of causes not shown in the graph. A strong response opens with a one-sentence paraphrase of the graph’s title, follows with a short overview highlighting the two or three most striking overall trends (which line rose or fell most, any point where lines crossed, the general shape of change), and only then moves into supporting detail with specific figures.

Because examiners specifically reward the overview as a distinct, identifiable paragraph, candidates should resist the temptation to dive straight into data description without first stepping back to summarise the big picture. Precise, varied language for describing trends (a steady increase, a sharp decline, a plateau, a fluctuation) and accurate use of comparative structures when contrasting two lines are what separate a strong band score from a merely accurate one.

Question 1

Structured 4 marks

The line graph below shows average monthly temperatures in two cities, Port Elyria and Calder Bay, over the course of a typical year. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Month Port Elyria (°C) Calder Bay (°C)
Jan 8 -2
Feb 9 -1
Mar 12 4
Apr 15 10
May 19 16
Jun 23 21
Jul 26 24
Aug 25 23
Sep 21 17
Oct 16 10
Nov 11 3
Dec 8 -1

The graph plots average temperature in degrees Celsius on the vertical axis against the twelve months of the year on the horizontal axis, with one line for each city; both lines rise to a single peak in July and fall to their lowest point in midwinter, but the Calder Bay line sits noticeably below the Port Elyria line for most of the year and dips below zero in three winter months.

Question 2

Structured 4 marks

The line graph below shows the percentage of total retail sales made through online and in-store channels in the country of Verrentia between 2015 and 2025. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Year Online sales (% of total retail) In-store sales (% of total retail)
2015 18 82
2017 24 76
2019 33 67
2021 47 53
2023 58 42
2025 66 34

The graph plots percentage share of total retail sales value on the vertical axis against six two-yearly points from 2015 to 2025 on the horizontal axis, with one line for online sales and one for in-store sales; the in-store line starts far above the online line but the two lines cross somewhere between 2021 and 2023, after which the online line remains higher for the rest of the period shown.

Question 3

Structured 4 marks

The line graph below shows the population of the town of Northgate, divided into three age groups, between 1990 and 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Year Under 18 (thousands) 18-64 (thousands) 65 and over (thousands)
1990 22 58 12
2000 20 63 15
2010 19 65 21
2020 18 64 29

The graph plots population in thousands on the vertical axis against four time points a decade apart, from 1990 to 2020, on the horizontal axis, with a separate line for each of the three age groups; the under-18 line falls gently and stays lowest for most of the period, the 18-64 line rises then flattens out, and the 65-and-over line climbs steadily throughout, overtaking the under-18 line by the final time point shown.

Question 4

Structured 4 marks

The line graph below shows the number of domestic and international visitors to the Aldemere Maritime Museum between 2015 and 2023. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Year Domestic visitors (thousands) International visitors (thousands)
2015 240 95
2017 255 110
2019 270 130
2021 230 20
2023 290 150

The graph plots number of visitors in thousands on the vertical axis against five years from 2015 to 2023 on the horizontal axis, with separate lines for domestic and international visitors; both lines rise gradually until 2019, then domestic visitors dip only slightly in 2021 while international visitors collapse to almost nothing in the same year, before both lines recover sharply and reach their highest points of the whole period in 2023.

Question 5

Structured 4 marks

The line graph below shows the percentage share of total energy consumption in the country of Kestraven supplied by four different fuel types between 1990 and 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Year Coal (%) Natural gas (%) Nuclear (%) Renewables (%)
1990 45 25 20 10
2000 38 30 18 14
2010 28 32 15 25
2020 12 30 10 48

The graph plots percentage share of total energy consumption on the vertical axis against four time points a decade apart, from 1990 to 2020, on the horizontal axis, with a separate line for each of the four fuel types; the coal line starts highest and falls continuously to become the lowest by 2020, the renewables line starts lowest and rises continuously to become the highest by 2020, crossing several of the other lines along the way, while natural gas rises then falls back only slightly and nuclear declines gently throughout.

Question 6

Structured 4 marks

The line graph below shows mobile phone subscriptions and internet subscriptions per 100 people in the country of Verdalia between 2000 and 2020.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Year Mobile phone subscriptions (per 100 people) Internet subscriptions (per 100 people)
2000 20 5
2005 65 25
2010 95 45
2015 110 70
2020 118 88

The graph plots two lines at five-year intervals from 2000 to 2020: mobile phone subscriptions, which rise steeply before levelling off in the final decade, and internet subscriptions, which climb at a steadier, more constant rate throughout the period and remain below the mobile phone line at every point shown.

Question 7

Structured 4 marks

The line graph below shows the unemployment rate, as a percentage of the total workforce, in three countries (Larsenia, Kordova and Mestria) between 2008 and 2020.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

2017 4.9 6.5 7.0
2020 8.6 5.8 8.4

The graph shows three lines tracking unemployment from 2008 to 2020: Larsenia's rate spikes sharply around 2011 before falling and then rising again by 2020; Kordova's rate starts highest of the three, rises to a peak in 2011, then falls for the rest of the period, ending the lowest of the three; and Mestria's rate starts lowest but climbs steadily throughout, overtaking Kordova by 2017 and finishing 2020 just below Larsenia's rate, which ends the period as the highest of the three.

Dec 410 270

The graph plots two lines across the twelve months of the year: Rivenmouth's consumption is highest in the winter months and lowest in mid-summer, while Sundale's consumption follows the opposite seasonal pattern, peaking in summer and falling to its lowest level in late winter; the two lines cross twice, once in spring and again in autumn.
