Amara, Bilal and Chen invest money in a small business in the ratio .
(a) Amara invests $240 more than Chen. Work out the total amount the three friends invest, and the amount each person invests. [4]
(b) At the end of the year the profit is shared between the three friends in the same ratio . Bilal receives $450 as his share of the profit. Work out the total profit. [3]

Part (a)
The investments are in the ratio
Use the known difference. Amara has parts and Chen has parts, so the difference between their investments is
We are told this difference equals $240, so
Find the value of one part:
So each part is worth $48.
Find the total. The total number of parts is so the total investment is
The three friends invest a total of dollars.
Find each share:
Check: ✓, and ✓.
So Amara invests $384, Bilal invests $240 and Chen invests $144.
Part (b)
The profit is shared in the same ratio , but the amounts are different, so we must work out a new value for one part.
Bilal’s share is parts, and this equals $450:
