A currency exchange counter converts British pounds (£) into Pakistani rupees (Rs) at a fixed rate. The number of rupees received is directly proportional to the number of pounds exchanged. At this rate, £1 is worth Rs 355.

(a) A tourist exchanges £40. Calculate how many rupees she receives. [2]

(b) Another tourist receives Rs 28,400 for the pounds she exchanges. Calculate how many pounds she exchanged. [2]

At the end of the day, the counter's total takings are made up of rupee cash and foreign-currency notes in the ratio 5:25 : 2.

(c) Write down the fraction of the total takings that is foreign-currency notes. [1]

Part (a): pounds to rupees

The rupees received are directly proportional to the pounds exchanged, so at a fixed rate we simply multiply by the exchange rate.

rupees=pounds×355\text{rupees} = \text{pounds} \times 355

Substitute 4040 pounds:

40×355=1420040 \times 355 = 14200

Rs 14,200\boxed{\text{Rs } 14{,}200}

Part (b): rupees to pounds

Now we work in the opposite direction: we know the rupees and want the pounds. Since rupees=pounds×355\text{rupees} = \text{pounds}\times 355, we divide by 355355 to undo the multiplication:

pounds=28400355\text{pounds} = \frac{28400}{355}

pounds=80\text{pounds} = 80

£80\boxed{\pounds 80}

Part (c): ratio as a fraction

The total takings are split rupee cash : foreign-currency notes =5:2= 5 : 2.

Total number of parts:

5+2=75 + 2 = 7
