A shop buys pairs of running shoes for $40 each.
The shop sells each pair at a marked price that is more than the price it paid.
In a clearance sale, this marked price is later reduced by .
(a) Calculate the marked price of a pair of shoes. [2]

(c) Find the overall percentage change from the price the shop paid ($40) to the sale price. State clearly whether this is an increase or a decrease. [3]

Part (a): the marked price
A increase means the marked price is of the cost price, a multiplier of :

Compare the sale price with the original cost price the shop paid ($40), not with the marked price.
Step 1: Find the change.
Since the sale price is greater than the cost price, this is an increase.
Step 2: Express the change as a percentage of the original amount.
Check using combined multipliers: the two changes together give a single multiplier
which is of the original amount, i.e. a increase overall, confirming the answer without needing the individual dollar values. Note this is not simply ; the second percentage change is applied to the already-increased marked price, not to the original cost price, so the changes cannot be subtracted directly.
