Section 3 is the most conversationally complex part of the Listening test, typically featuring two students or a student and a tutor discussing coursework, a project plan, or research findings. Multiple-choice questions ask the candidate to select the option that matches what was actually agreed or concluded, which is rarely the first opinion voiced. Speakers commonly raise an idea, a second speaker disagrees or adds a condition, and only the final, negotiated view is correct. Matching questions ask candidates to link a list of topics, tasks or opinions to a shorter list of people or categories, again testing whether attribution (“who thinks what”) has been tracked correctly.
Because opinions shift mid-conversation, the strongest strategy is to read all options before listening, note the general topic of each, and then track changes of direction using discourse markers such as “actually,” “on second thoughts,” or “I still think that”. These signal that the safe-sounding first answer is often a distractor.
