Section 1 opens the Listening test with a conversation between two speakers in an everyday social situation (a phone enquiry, a hotel booking, a library registration) and is the only section guaranteed to involve two people rather than a monologue or larger group. The ten questions are almost always form-completion or note-completion items that ask for concrete details: a surname, a postcode, a reference number, a date, a price. Because the recording plays only once and the questions appear in the same order as the information in the audio, the winning strategy is to preview the form before listening, predict the type of answer each gap needs (a number, a proper noun, a unit), and listen for signpost phrases that introduce corrections or restatements, speakers in this section frequently self-correct a spelling or number.
Candidates should write answers exactly as heard, respecting the word-and/or-number limit stated in the instructions (commonly “no more than two words and/or a number”), and should be alert to alternative spellings of names that get spelled aloud letter by letter. Losing marks here is rarely about vocabulary. It is almost always about mishearing a number, missing a spelling correction, or exceeding the word limit.

Receptionist: Good morning, Oakwood Leisure Centre, this is Sam speaking. How can I help you today? Caller: Hi, I'd like some information about joining the centre. I saw an advert for family memberships. Receptionist: Of course, let's get some details. Could I take your name first, please? Caller: Yes, it's Marcus Whitfield. Receptionist: Could you spell your surname for me? Caller: Sure. W-H-I-T-F-I-E-L-D. Receptionist: Whitfield, lovely, thank you. And could I get a contact number in case we need to call you back? Caller: It's 07823 441905. Receptionist: Let me just check that back to you, 07823 441095? Caller: Almost, it ends in 905, not 095. So that's 07823 441905. Receptionist: Got it, 07823 441905. And what type of membership are you interested in? Caller: A family membership, that covers me, my partner and our two children, doesn't it? Receptionist: That's right, up to two adults and two children under sixteen. Is there a particular activity you're hoping to use most? Caller: Mainly swimming. The children are keen swimmers. Receptionist: Great, the family membership includes unlimited pool access. When would you like the membership to start? Caller: Ideally once the school term begins, so September would be perfect. Receptionist: September works well, we usually have space then. Now, there's a one-off joining fee of thirty-five pounds per family, and then a monthly fee after that. Caller: Okay, and how much is the monthly fee? Receptionist: For a family membership it's ninety-eight pounds a month, that's cheaper than paying for an individual and a child membership separately. Caller: That's fine, we'll go with that. Is there anything else I need to do now? Receptionist: I'll just note your enquiry down and give you a reference number so you can quote it when you come in to sign up. It's OL2298. Caller: OL2298, thank you. Receptionist: No problem, we look forward to seeing you and the family in September!

Travel Agent: Good morning, Silversands Travel, this is Claire. How can I help? Customer: Hi Claire, I'd like to book the guided cycling tour of the Loire Valley that's advertised on your website. Travel Agent: Certainly, I can help with that. Could I take your name, please? Customer: Yes, it's Adrian Fitzgerald. Travel Agent: Could you spell your surname for me? Customer: Of course. F-I-T-Z-G-E-R-A-L-D. Travel Agent: Fitzgerald, thank you. And how many people will be travelling in your group? Customer: There'll be four of us altogether, my wife, our two adult children and myself. Travel Agent: Lovely, a group of four. We currently have two departure dates available, the twelfth of April and the third of May, which would suit you? Customer: The third of May would be better for us, since the children finish exams by then. Travel Agent: The third of May it is. Now, for accommodation, we offer either three-star hotels or a mix of family-run guesthouses, the guesthouse option tends to be more atmospheric, though slightly less central. Customer: We'll go with the guesthouses, then, that sounds more in keeping with the trip. Travel Agent: Great choice. The tour begins with a welcome meeting, everyone gathers at the tourist office in Amboise on the first morning. Customer: Amboise, got it. Travel Agent: Bikes are included in the package, but if anyone needs an e-bike upgrade, that's an additional forty-five pounds per person. Customer: We'll take the standard bikes, thanks, no need for the upgrade. Travel Agent: No problem. For travel insurance, we offer a standard policy included in the price, or a premium policy with better medical cover for an extra charge, which would you prefer? Customer: We'll take the premium option, just to be safe. Travel Agent: Good idea for a cycling trip. To secure the booking today, we'll need a deposit of one hundred and fifty pounds, with the balance due six weeks before departure. Customer: That would make the balance due date the third of March, then? Travel Agent: Let me check... actually, six weeks before the third of May brings us to the twenty-second of March, so that's your balance due date. Customer: Understood, the twenty-second of March. Travel Agent: I'll email you the full itinerary, and here's your booking reference for now, it's LV5567. Customer: LV5567, thank you very much. Travel Agent: My pleasure, we'll be in touch nearer the time!
