Reading Multiple Choice questions follow the order of the passage and ask candidates to choose the best answer from four options, or in some cases to choose several correct answers from a longer list. Distractors are rarely random; they typically restate a detail from the passage but change a key fact, exaggerate a qualified claim into an absolute one, or combine two separate ideas from different parts of the passage into a single, incorrect option.
Because the four options often share vocabulary with the same short section of text, the most effective technique is to identify the relevant section first using the question’s own keywords, then read that section closely before looking at the options, rather than jumping straight to eliminating options from memory. Where multiple answers are required from a longer list, checking each option independently against the passage, rather than picking the first few that sound plausible, avoids the common error of selecting a technically true but unrequested detail.
Question 1
A woodpecker striking a tree trunk decelerates its head at forces that would concuss almost any other vertebrate almost instantly, repeated dozens of times a second during a single bout of drumming. Yet under normal conditions in the wild, woodpeckers show no obvious sign of brain injury from this behaviour, a puzzle that has drawn the attention of biomechanics researchers for decades. Early explanations focused almost entirely on the skull's internal structure, assuming that some part of the head must be acting as a built-in cushion to soak up the shock before it reaches the brain.

This shock-absorber picture, in which the spongy bone plates were assumed to act as a built-in cushion, was widely accepted until a 2022 study combining high-speed video with computer modelling of skull movement during impact reached a strikingly different conclusion, calling that cushioning hypothesis into question. The researchers found barely any relative motion between the skull and the brain during a strike, suggesting the skull is not compressing to absorb an impact so much as remaining rigid enough that very little of the force ever reaches brain tissue in the first place. Under this newer view, a woodpecker's brain survives less because of internal padding and more because its small mass, combined with the extremely short duration of each strike, keeps the resulting strain below the threshold for injury.
Even so, the underlying anatomy has already proved useful outside biology. Engineers studying the layered stiffness gradient running through a woodpecker's beak and skull have borrowed the principle for designing impact-absorbing structures, including cycling and industrial helmets and the protective casings built around aircraft flight recorders, both of which must survive a single violent impact without transmitting damaging force to whatever they are protecting.

This slow payoff complicates the politics of restoration. The spotlight effect is not confined to physical appearance. Follow-up work found a similar pattern when participants made a minor factual error during a group task: the person who misspoke consistently overestimated how many peers would remember the slip a week later, even though recall among the group faded rapidly. Understanding this bias has practical value: therapists working with clients who experience intense social anxiety sometimes use the mismatch between predicted and actual attention as evidence that feared judgment is far less likely, and far less lasting, than it feels in the moment.

For much of the twentieth century, many secondary schools sorted students into separate classes according to prior attainment, a practice usually termed streaming or, when applied subject by subject rather than across the whole timetable, setting. Proponents held that grouping students of broadly similar ability allowed teachers to pitch lessons more precisely, sparing high attainers from repetition and sparing low attainers from material that had raced ahead of their grasp. Critics, meanwhile, warned that the practice risked calcifying early judgments of ability into fixed institutional labels, with students placed in lower groups receiving not merely different content but, subtly and cumulatively, lower expectations.
A large longitudinal study following several thousand students from the start of secondary school to their final examinations offers some of the most detailed evidence available on the question. Students were tracked regardless of whether their school streamed, set by subject, or taught mixed-ability classes throughout, allowing comparison of otherwise similar students across different grouping policies. The headline finding was that average examination outcomes across an entire cohort differed only marginally between grouping models, but this near-parity concealed a sharper redistribution beneath the surface: students placed in the highest sets during their first year tended to outperform equally able peers in mixed-ability schools by a small but consistent margin, while students placed in the lowest sets underperformed equally able peers by a considerably larger margin.
The researchers proposed that this asymmetry stemmed less from the instructional content delivered to each group than from a well-documented psychological mechanism: teachers' expectations, once anchored to a label such as "top set" or "bottom set," subtly shape the pace, challenge, and feedback offered to a class, and students tend to perform in ways that confirm those expectations over time.
