Listening Section 1: Form & Note Completion: Question 8
Syllabus L.section-1
Transcript-based practice (no audio).
Agent: Silverline Car Hire, this is Ben speaking. How can I help you today?
Customer: Hi, I'd like to book a car for a trip next month.
Agent: No problem. Could I take your full name, please?
Customer: It's Isabelle Ferris.
Agent: And how do you spell your surname?
Customer: F-E-R-R-I-S.
Agent: Thanks. Could you give me your driving licence number?
Customer: Yes, it's FR206814B.
Agent: Great, and what dates were you thinking?
Customer: I'd like to pick the car up on the 3rd of August, and return it on the 10th of August.
Agent: So pick-up on the 3rd of August, and drop-off on the 10th of August, is that right?
Customer: Actually, sorry, could we make the pick-up the 4th instead? I've just remembered I have an early meeting on the 3rd.
Agent: Sure, no problem, pick-up on the 4th of August, drop-off on the 10th of August.
Agent: And what type of car would you like? We have a compact, a saloon, or a seven-seater.
Customer: I think the saloon would be best for us.
Agent: Good choice. Will you be picking the car up from our city-centre branch, or the airport branch?
Customer: The airport branch, please, we're flying in that morning.
Agent: No problem. Would you like to add breakdown cover? It's an extra £8 for the week.
Customer: Yes, let's add that.
Agent: Great. So with breakdown cover, the total comes to £240, plus a security deposit of £100, refundable when you return the car.
Customer: That's fine.
Agent: Last thing. I'll generate your booking reference now. That's SC4487.
Customer: SC4487, got it, thank you.

Answer key with explanations
- Ferris. The customer spells her surname: “F-E-R-R-I-S.”
- FR206814B. She states her driving licence number as “FR206814B.”
- 4 August (She first says the 3rd, then corrects herself: “could we make the pick-up the 4th instead?”) the agent confirms “pick-up on the 4th of August.”
- 10 August. The drop-off date is unaffected by the correction and stays at “the 10th,” confirmed as “drop-off on the 10th.”
- Saloon. Offered a choice of car types, she says “I think the saloon would be best for us.”
- Airport branch (Offered a choice of branches, she chooses “The airport branch, please”) the city-centre branch is a distractor.
- £8. The agent states breakdown cover is “an extra £8 for the week.”
- £240. The agent states “the total comes to £240.”
- £100. The agent states “a security deposit of £100, refundable when you return the car.”
