Because the summary reorganises and paraphrases the passage’s ideas, the first gap does not necessarily correspond to the very start of the passage, so the key first step is to identify roughly which section of the text the summary is based on, often signalled by a heading, topic reference, or the first one or two completed examples if given.

Where a word bank is provided, checking each option’s part of speech against what the gap grammatically requires (noun vs. verb vs. adjective) quickly eliminates several wrong choices before reading begins; where answers must be extracted from the passage, the same word-limit and exact-spelling rules apply as in sentence completion.
