Sentence Completion gives an incomplete sentence that paraphrases part of the passage and asks the candidate to fill the gap with a short extract from the text itself, respecting a word limit such as “no more than two words.” Because the completed sentence must read as grammatically correct English, predicting what kind of word is missing (a noun, an adjective, a number) before searching narrows down the matching section of the passage considerably and prevents answers that are factually close but grammatically wrong.

Since the sentence stem is typically a paraphrase rather than a direct quotation, candidates should search for synonyms and reworded ideas rather than the stem’s exact wording, then copy the answer directly from the passage without altering its spelling or word form (unless the limit and context genuinely require a different grammatical form). Exceeding the stated word limit results in the answer being marked incorrect even if the content is right.
